Hem Tanwar is a Managing Director for the Retirement, Insurance & Government Practice at Cambridge Associates.
Hem joined the firm in 2022, and works with pension plans, nuclear decommission trusts, and other institutional investors. He specializes in private markets and helps his clients build custom private investment portfolios. He brings a unique perspective on risk assessment to his client work and portfolio construction, having gathered operational experience across Shanghai, China, and India.
Hem is a voting member of the Real Assets Investment Committee which helps steer the firm’s approach to the asset class. He is also a frequent speaker at industry conferences and contributes to the firm’s thought leadership.
Hem has more than 15 years of investment experience, including 11 years in investment management across markets (public, private, and strategic direct) complemented by four years in multiple operating roles. Before joining Cambridge Associates, Hem was Director of Asset Allocation at Dow Chemical Pension Plan, where he actively managed the $7 billion equity book of the $20 billion plan. He also managed the private markets portfolio during his time at Dow Chemical, where he invested across private equity, infrastructure, and real assets, and built a robust co-investment program. Prior to this, Hem served as Head of Mergers & Acquisitions at Tata Power, a utility company in India.
Hem received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Mumbai. He is a CFA® charterholder.
